About REG

The Research Engineering Group includes data scientists, research software engineers (RSEs), AI engineers, research infrastructure engineers, data engineers and other digital research technical professionals (RTPs).

What we do

Members of the group work across the Bristol research community. Many are research-active or supporting research projects. This includes working directly on grant-funded research projects, supporting advanced infrastructure such as HPC, or providing their expertise to researchers across the University.

Our team of research engineers are also available for collaborations and can be costed into research projects that require data science, AI or research software engineering expertise.

  • Ask-JGI - data science, AI and software engineering helpdesk for researchers and staff at the University of Bristol.
  • Data Ethics Club - online journal club about doing data science ethically, every two weeks.
  • Data Hazards - a project to help us all identify the hazards of using data science and AI.
  • Alan Turing Institute liaison academics linking the University of Bristol to the wider Turing network and interest groups, for example.
  • Today I Learned (TIL) – for making interesting things we talk about on Slack more permanent, with minimal fuss. See the ‘contributing TILs’ for instructions.

  • RSE South West - a community of research software engineers mainly from the South West of the UK and GW4 Universities. Many of the members of REG also attend RSE South West events.
  • Society of Research Software Engineering - organise an annual conference and other events such as training, meetings, workshops or seminars.
